Quick answer

The typical folding power wheelchair in 2026 weighs about 43 lb with its battery, carries 300 lb, has an 18 in seat, uses a 24 V lithium battery of about 240 Wh, and claims about 10 miles at 3.7–4 mph. Clear gaps remain: light auto-folding chairs, light chairs with long range, and travel chairs rated above 300 lb.

Key takeaways

  • 18 of 19 models with published battery data are at or under 288 Wh, shaped by the 300 Wh airline threshold.
  • Claimed range per 100 Wh varies about 3×, which points to different test conditions.
  • Carbon frames are about 16 lb lighter at the median and about $750 more expensive.
  • Only 2 of 24 current models carry more than 300 lb, and no auto-folding chair weighs under 40 lb.

What the market already offers

If you are specifying a new folding power wheelchair, or picking one to import, the first question is: what does the market already offer? We compiled published specs for 24 current models from 14 brands. Here is what the data shows.

Data: manufacturer and authorized-retailer pages, checked 29 Sep 2026. Medians exclude models where a spec isn't published. Claimed values, not lab tests.

1. The "standard" folding power chair in 2026

SpecMedian (current models)Typical range
Weight with battery42.8 lb27.8 – 95 lb
Max user weight300 lb220 – 350 lb
Seat width18 in16 – 20 in
Battery240 Wh, 24 V144 – 454 Wh
Claimed range10 mi6 – 15 mi
Top speed3.7–4 mph3.6 – 6 mph
Advertised price≈ $2,700$850 – $4,234

The baseline spec is 24 V / 10–12 Ah lithium, ~300 lb capacity, 18 in seat, ~10 mi claimed range, 3.7–4 mph. A new product needs a clear reason to be different from this.

2. Battery sizing is set by airline rules

Of 19 models where voltage and capacity are published, 18 are at or under 288 Wh, and 13 of 19 sit at exactly 240 or 288 Wh. That reflects the 300 Wh threshold in airline guidance (see our air travel guide). The only model above it, the Jazzy Passport (454 Wh), ships with a separate travel battery.

Design implication: anyone targeting travelers should design around ≤ 300 Wh per pack. To offer more range, use a second airline-compliant pack (as Quickie and ComfyGO do), not one bigger pack.

3. Claimed range per Wh varies about 3×

Dividing claimed range by battery energy gives about 1.9 to 5.7 miles per 100 Wh across models. The spread is too large to be only motor efficiency. Test conditions differ. Pride, for example, publishes range at a stated rider weight (220 lb and 250 lb), while many brands don't state test conditions.

Implication for brands: publishing range at a stated rider weight and surface is a credibility advantage, and it reduces returns from "range didn't match the ad" complaints.

4. Carbon fiber: lighter on average, not always

FrameModelsMedian weight w/ batteryMedian price
Carbon fiber833.7 lb$3,049
Aluminum / steel1650 lb$2,295

Carbon chairs are about 16 lb lighter at the median and about $750 more. But the lightest chair in the dataset (Forcemech Ultralite G10, 27.8 lb) is not carbon, and one carbon chair (Jazzy Carbon, 43.6 lb) is heavier than several aluminum ones. Structure and component choice (motors, wheels, battery) matter as much as the frame material.

5. Where the market is thin

  • Capacity above 300 lb: only 2 of 24 current models (305 lb and 350 lb). Demand for bariatric-capable travel chairs is not well served.
  • Auto-fold: only 2 models (ComfyGO IQ-7000, Airwheel H3S), and both weigh 60+ lb without battery. No light (under 40 lb) auto-folding chair appears in the data.
  • Light and long range: no chair under 40 lb claims more than 11 mi on its standard battery.
  • Tight turning radius under 40 lb: most light chairs list 28–36 in. Only the Golden Cricket (22 in) goes below 24 in in this class.
  • Published data: 12 of 24 models don't publish motor power, and 6 don't publish turning radius. A complete, honest spec sheet is itself a way to stand out.

6. What this means if you're developing or sourcing a chair

  1. Pick one clear gap (for example: under 35 lb and 350 lb capacity, or a light auto-fold) instead of matching the median spec at a lower price.
  2. Lock battery architecture early: ≤ 300 Wh packs, UN 38.3 test reports, and an airline letter ready at launch.
  3. Budget for certification: FDA 510(k) or exemption status and ISO 7176 testing in the US, CE/MDR in the EU. These take time and money that the spec sheet doesn't show.
  4. Check factory claims against a benchmark like this one. Most folding power chairs are made in China. Supplier "range" and "weight" figures should be tested, not copied.

Methodology: specs were taken from the manufacturer's website where available, otherwise from authorized US retailers, and checked on 29 Sep 2026. Where sources conflicted, we used the manufacturer figure and noted the conflict in the database. Weights marked "derived" are published frame weight plus published battery weight. myvelogo is independent and receives no payments from brands in this dataset. Trademarks belong to their owners.
